Sun Wukong, the Monkey King (孙悟空）, and Journey to the West are undoubtedly the most well known and beloved stories to come out of Asia. From video games like Sonson or Black Myth to Anime like One Piece and Dragonball, Wukong's origins and history are unequalled. Growing up one of my favourite TV shows was a strange Japanese comedy called Saiyuki. Known outside of Japan as Monkey or Monkey Magic, it lasted only 52 episodes, but the English dubbed reruns became cult hit in the 80’s and 90’s. At first I had no idea that this series was based on The Chinese classic novel, Journey to the West, a story 400 years old which itself is a fictionalized retelling of a Buddhist monk’s spiritual quest to India over a thousand years ago.
