Harmonic Atheist - Tammie Willis - Escaping the Independent Fundamental Baptist Church Cult

Today I spoke with Tammie Willis, who shared her story of growing up in the Independent Fundamental Baptist Church cult. She described the ways that the church psychologically abuses people, especially children, as it tries to indoctrinate them into the mythology of Christianity.

We discussed the negative results of the purity culture movement, and touched on the ways that threatening kids with hell and instilling in them a fear of the end times, i.e., being "left behind," creates an extremely toxic environment. We zoomed out a bit as well to talk about the larger context of how the church blinds people people from critical information and alternative perspectives, and ultimately impairs people's ability to think critically and keeps them from questioning the Judeo-Christian narrative.

We moved on to discuss how ongoing experiences with Christians can trigger those of us who have escaped, and how we should deal with those situations and emotions, as well as the broader issue of healing from religious trauma.

We ended by talking about the beauty of life without religion, about the joy of embracing reality, and about how to reframe the narrative of our lives once we are free from the Christian cult environment.

Thanks to Tammie for her vulnerability and power in sharing her story and helping others to think through these critical issues, as they reclaim their life and identity.
