This video looks at events that led to the end of Sephardi Jewish life in Spain, the second in the series. The centuries leading up to 1492 saw a rise in disputations, religious violence, and racism, the establishment of the Inquisition and ultimately expulsion. This lecture defines these terms and explains who was impacted by each of these successive persecutory developments. With this chapter, open Jewish life in Spain came to an end, while giving birth to a wider Sephardi diaspora, and the converso Jewish story in Iberia.

The story of the Spanish & Portuguese Jews, or the Western Sephardim, can only be understood when considered across a millennia of history, beginning in Iberia and then spanning across the globe. This overview course looks at the unique development of this particular group of Sephardi Jews, those who came to settle in Western Europe and the America. Their experiences laid the foundation for Jewish life today.
