A squadron of land based US Marine F4U-1A 'Corsair' fighters with the 5th Marine Division are taking off to escort two squadrons of US Navy Hellcats going to strike artillery targets on Tinian Island. Recon planes to the south have spotted two incoming squadrons of Japanese fighters coming up from Guam to reinforce their army fighting on Tinian. These should be their Kawasaki Ki-61 hei Hien fighters from the 78th Sentai, a formidable new aircraft equipped with German made cannons. These new weapons are quite powerful and their pilots are well trained, they wiped out several US Navy bomber squadrons attacking Guam the other day. They should not be underestimated.
