Enhancing perfSONAR Measurement Capabilities using P4 Programmable Switches and Adaptive Sampling

Abstract:
This presentation will describe P4-perfSONAR, a measurement system that leverages the capability of P4 programmable switches to enhance perfSONAR measurements. The proposed system provides per-flow visibility by employing P4 switches that operate on passive traffic. High-resolution measurements and statistics computed by the P4 switch in the data plane are periodically reported to a perfSONAR node. The perfSONAR node produces visual representation of RTT, throughput, packet loss rate, fairness index, queueing occupancy, and others. The system has two operating modes to control the reporting rate from the P4 switch to the perfSONAR node. The manual mode permits the administrator to configure the reporting report statically. The automated mode automates the reporting period according to the variability of the monitored signals, thus eliminating the need for human
