I'll be showing you how to present like Jim Rohn on this week's episode of MasterTalk. Visit https://www.rockstarcommunicator.com/ to attend one of my FREE LIVE online trainings.
1. Figure out the easiest version of your ideas to scale them faster. (0:58)
Despite all of the incredible number of bright minds he coached in his life, whenever Jim gave seminars, he would focus on very simple ideas that his audience could implement immediately after his talk or even during his speech. Here’s an example of what I mean here. In one of his keynotes, he was telling the group about a book called the “Richest Man in Babylon” and how only 10% of people go out and actually buy the book. He says, why is it that only 10% of people I speak do this task? It’s an easy book, and I don’t know, all I know is that when I recommend a book 10% buy it, and 90% don’t, so walk away from the 90%. That’s the idea, that’s it, so simple, yet so powerful.
When are ideas can be understood by more people, it’s much easier to scale them, to bring them to millions of people around the world, and the lesson here is that if you really care about impacting a lot of lives, you can’t talk like an expert all the time. You need to be willing to take your complex ideas and make them simple enough so that everyone can understand them.
Sure, with my inner circle clients, I go through really complex ideas of public speaking, but when I talk on a platform like YouTube, I focus on easy bit size pieces of advice that encourages people to even start their public speaking by asking simple questions like: How would the world change if you were an incredible speaker?
2. Make a list of every mistake you can make along the journey and use them. (3:39)
Jim uses his own ideas to make fun of himself AND to teach others all at the same time. One day he was talking to one of his early mentors who asked him to bring his goals and he said well, I don’t have them written down, and the mentor responded with, well do you have them in your car or your house? And he simply responded with, well no I’ve never written them in my life before.
What Jim is trying to do here is he explains the biggest mistakes not only he’s made in his life, but also what most of the people watching him right now are thinking about in that moment. Instead of simply saying you need to write your goals down, he instead spins that point on its head and says you know when I talked to my mentor, I didn’t have any goals which translates to hey, it’s OK if you don’t have goals right now, let’s start writing some down right now and figure out as we go. It’s motivating for people in the seminar to go if Jim struggled with this, it’s normal that I am to, let me take that first step in achieving my goals & results.
That’s why I’m a firm believer in this idea that as you have long discussions with the audiences that you serve, you start to quickly figure out all their pain points and fears in regard to your idea. This is how to present like Jim Rohn.
3. Always think of yourself as a member of the team, rather than the leader of the pack. (6:06)
Out of everything I’ve seen from Jim’s old keynotes, the lining thread remains the same. Always imagine yourself as a member of the audience whenever you’re delivering speeches. The issue I have with a lot of professional speakers is that they get really good at public speaking and stop talking to their audience because they “made” it, and that worsens their public speaking skills overtime, because they’re not able to adapt to the new needs and wants of the people they’re trying to help in the first place. I think Jim’s an incredible example of someone who never forgot where he came from.
Even when he started coaching CEO’s and people like Tony Robbins in the early stages of his career, he never forgot about the core audience he speaks to on the regular, people who are afraid of taking the first step, he didn’t get lost in this idea that he only speaks to CEO’s now, with the general public in mind, despite the crazy amount of success he accumulated over his life, he always thought about keeping those people top of mind, that’s why he’s so simple in the way that he shared his ideas with the world.
