What is ATP?
ATP is an abbreviation for Adenosine Triphosphate.

This is a molecule made up of one Adenosine, and Three Phosphates in a bonded chain.

ATP is the energy currency in our body.

The “spark” of energy occurs when one Phosphate breaks free from the ATP chain. At this point, the ATP becomes one molecule of Phosphate (on its own) and a molecule of Adenosine DiPhosphate. ADP is one adenosine and two phosphates bonded together.

It is the role of our three energy systems to continually supply us with plentiful amounts of ATP.

Why Carbs are needed for Activity and ATP
We have three energy systems :

Aerobic
Lactic Acid
Creatine-Phosphate
and each of these use different fuel sources to create ATP, which allows us to make ATP regardless of our environment of the stress on our body

The Aerobic System uses Carbohydrates and fats as the primary fuel source to create plentiful amounts of ATP.

The Lactic Acid System also requires Carbohydrates (in the form of glycogen) to create ATP.

Therefore it is important that we encourage our clients to have a well-balanced diet, which includes carbohydrates, so the client can create adequate levels of ATP and fuel their activity.
