(9 Jul 2021) A World Cup venue was turned into a vaccination center for migrants in Moscow to ramp up vaccination efforts after authorities made it compulsory.
Luzhniki Stadium, which hosted the 2018 tournament's final, started offering vaccinations on 7 July for a fee.
According to Moscow's Mayor Sergey Sobyanin, medics at the facility can vaccinate around 15,000 people per day. The cost of a single-shot Sputnik Light vaccine amounts to 1,300 rubles (17.5 US dollars).
As of 8 July, 27 million people in Russia -- or just 18.5% of the 146-million population -- had received at least one shot of a COVID-19 vaccine, and 18.5 million, or 12.6%, have been fully vaccinated.
Officials have blamed these poor statistics on widespread skepticism about the vaccines, lax attitudes toward taking necessary precautions and a quick spread of more infectious variants.
Amid this new surge, Moscow has made vaccinations mandatory for employees in certain sectors, such as government offices, retail, health care, education, restaurants and other service industries.
The daily tally of confirmed infections has more than doubled in the past month, soaring from around 9,000 in early June to over 23,000 this week.
Russia's state coronavirus task force reported 725 deaths on 9 July and 25,766 new cases.
