=== About this Song ===
As I looked through many hours of old VHS and DV tapes for the “Reflections” project, I couldn’t help but notice a few trends in the content I found on them. The expected videos of holidays and vacations were there of course, but I also discovered that long before the days of taking and posting cute photos and videos of dogs and cats on Instagram became a trend, I spent a lot of time taking random video footage of the different pets that my family had through the years.
Since I was a kid, my family had kept fish, turtles, parakeets, and rabbits as pets, but my folks always had a big soft spot in their hearts for dogs. Our first family dog appeared on our doorstep in Queens on a snowy February day. She seemed cold, so my mom fed her on the front steps, and she stayed by our front door for a few days. Eventually, we let her in the house and ultimately adopted our family “Princess.” A few years later, we found a few abandoned puppies in a local park and decided to keep one of them with us while offering the others up for adoption.
Through various rescues and adoptions over the years, the menagerie grew until at one point, we had five puppers of different shapes and sizes running around the house and in the backyard. At times, it certainly seemed like a bit much - but it was never too much for my mom, who always loved caring for them.
Looking back at the many hours of video I took of the dogs reminded me how much I enjoyed their presence and their unique, quirky personalities. Although at this point they have all since crossed over the rainbow bridge, watching these videos reminds me of the sounds of their barks, the way would they would run around the yard, and the feeling of their fur as they would curl up next to me on the couch or beg for attention (and food) under the kitchen table.
Though I haven’t had any pets of my own in a long time, when we moved into our new home in 2020, the previous owners regularly fed a local neighborhood cat. They asked if we would continue to do so after they moved away, and we were delighted at the idea of having a furry friend visit our home regularly.
Truth be told, I was never a cat person initially - partially because I’ve always had to avoid them due to being severely allergic to their fur. I always used to think they were cold and uncaring animals. However, our neighborhood cat “Boo” has been visiting for food and treats and fresh water for over 5 years now, and not long ago, another feline friend has been joining him on his visits to our backyard and now we feed and pet the two of them whenever we see them waiting by the door.
I’m now just as obsessed with these smaller furry friends as I ever was with the dogs we used to have, and I love waking up in the morning to watch them scurry towards the door for some breakfast. I watch as they sunbathe and play in the yard and jump on the deck furniture, and I still take (and post) a lot of videos of them because they’re so charming and adorable.
The “Running Through the New World” theme from the early levels of Kirby and the Forgotten Land has a joyous, playful quality that reminded me of the pets we had through the years and of our lovable outdoor cats who keep us company these days. I felt that the music would go perfectly with footage of our furry friends, old and new, and would make for a fitting reminder of all the joy they have and continue to bring into our lives.
Enjoy, and thanks for listening!
