This week we’re checking out Doheny State Beach in Dana Point. Doheny’s one of California’s most popular state beaches with the amenities to cover almost every type of beachgoer. It was great for our needs. We wanted a beach with day-use spots we could reverse into to open up right onto the Beach. While the beach in the Doheny’s south day-use area isn’t nearly as good as is Northern Beach. It’s still an amazing benefit to be able to just jump out from your home base straight onto the beach. So if you’re coming to Doheny with the intention to back in like us and enjoy the sand, be sure to get in and stake out a spot earlier so you don’t get pushed back into the rocky parts of the Southern Day Use Area of the beach. #dohenystatebeach #danapoint

Right in the middle of the State Beach lies their Campground. Walking through the grounds I was really impressed with the beachfront campsites and hot showers so we’re looking into booking a night or two to sleep over once the bookings aren’t so hard to get.

Doheny’s North Day-Use is the main beach where you’ll find most of the visitors. When we went the beach was packed full of people having a good time. In addition to just laying out to get a tan even more people were out taking advantage of the Beaches’ other activities like surfing, volleyball, biking, horseshoeing, and maybe some even checked out their much-promoted aquarium. With food options and BBQ Pits, you’ll see plenty of families out there renting picnic areas for things like birthday parties or even family reunions.

That being said, Doheny beach really does have something for everyone. You can easily stay there the entire day. Not to mention the beach is really easy to get to since it’s so close to the 5 freeway. Parking prices vary, but because of our sprinter van, we recently got the CALIFORNIA EXPLORER VEHICLE DAY USE ANNUAL PASS which is good at most California State Beaches as well as a large amount of State Parks. While the initial $195 investment seems a bit high you’ll start seeing the pass pay for itself the more places you go. Because of that we’ve got plenty of future State Beach adventurous coming up in the next year.
