In case you missed it, NASA’s Mars Perseverance Rover touched down on the Red Planet sending back our first audio recordings from the surface.

The rover’s landing provided iconic visuals of space exploration history. Perseverance’s mission is to search for signs of ancient microbial life. It will characterize the planet’s geology and past climate and pave way for the potential human exploration of Mars. This mission will be the first to collect and cache Martian rock and regolith. The steps taken by Perseverance are part of the larger scale Moon to Mars exploration approach which includes the Artemis missions to the Moon.

Severe winter weather rampaged across Texas leading to huge power outages affecting over 4 million people!

Temperatures dipped to record lows across the state causing water pipes to freeze and burst. Icy roads and deadly winter conditions led to over 550 vehicle crashes. The state suffered for over a week without power and at least 40 deaths were caused by the winter weather. Many compared the effects of the winter weather to that of a powerful hurricane. The state will take potentially years to recover from the costs associated with the energy demand across the state and customers are likely to see high electric bills due to the high demand and little supply of energy. Leadership in the state has been under much scrutiny for the lack of preparedness during these difficult times.

A strong 7.3-magnitude earthquake off the coast of Fukushima was felt by those in Tokyo, Japan earlier in February. More than 100 people were injured. This earthquake came a decade after a powerful 9.1-magnitude earthquake impacted the same vicinity. The 9.1-magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami led to the deaths of about 16,000 people. Luckily, the most recent earthquake was not as severe. That’s because the most recent earthquake occurred deeper within the Earth’s crust. The 2011 Great Tohoku Earthquake was much more shallow resulting in even more devastation.
