Today I participated in the 7th Annual Southeast Michigan Antique Tractor Poker Run. This is the third year in a row I’ve done it with my dad, uncles, cousins, and friends.

This year, I went with my dad, who drove my uncle’s 1953 Farmall Super M; my Uncle Mike, who drove his 1966 Farmall 656; my cousin Matt Marks, who drove my uncle’s 1958 Farmall 450; my cousin Eli Marks, who drove his Farmall MTA; and I drove my uncle’s 1957 Farmall 450. I also had two other family members in the run, but I’m not sure what they drove.

One of my relatives, Lawrence Marks, took the prize this year as the oldest driver at 93 years old, and his friend Jay Fischer came in second at 91 years old.

Bailey Farms in Ridgeway were the original organizers of the Antique Tractor Poker Run. Last year was their final year hosting it, and this year Sammy Thompson took it over to keep the tradition going.

I’m not sure how many tractors participated this year, but it seemed like fewer than in previous years. However, there were still well over 100+ tractors.

This year’s route started at Sammy Thompson’s farm. Our first stop was Michigan Agricultural Commodities (MAC) in Blissfield for breakfast burritos and milk provided by Calder Dairy Farm in Carleton. Our second stop was Ottawa Lake Co-Op for cookies and drinks, and our third stop was Gust Brothers Farms in Ottawa Lake for donuts and frozen apple cider.

Unfortunately, about a mile before Gust Brothers Farms—on the ride from Ottawa Lake Co-Op—I blew a front tire on the left side of the 450. We pulled it into a wheat field and left it there until the end of the poker run. I rode with my dad on the Super M to Gust Brothers instead.

After leaving Gust Brothers, all participants returned to Sammy Thompson’s to finish the day with food trucks, raffle prizes, and more.

My dad, cousins, and I drove the remaining tractors back to our farm, while my uncle and other cousin grabbed their truck and trailer to haul the 450 home.

Next year’s poker run will be in Milan, MI, and I can’t wait to do it again!
