FORT COLLINS, CO (KUSA/CNN) -- A high school principal is getting a lot of criticism for his decision to allow a multicultural student club to recite the Pledge of Allegiance in Arabic.

"We have a tremendous amount of diversity in our school," said Tom Lopez, principal of Rocky Mountain High School.

The club asked the principal if they could read the pledge in languages they know best. First, members read the pledge in French, then Spanish, and on Monday, Arabic.

The pledge has sparked discussion and threats in the form of phone messages from parents that Lopez busied himself answering.

"I guess I'm getting worn down a little by how intense their sense of hate has been represented in some of the things they've written and said," Lopez said.

But the feedback has also been positive.

Lopez says the school is a place of inclusion where one message can be communicated in many different ways.

"When they pledge allegiance to United States, that's exactly what they're saying," Lopez said. "They're just using another language as their vehicle," he said.
