My name is James, and I am a beetle kill Spruce processor in South Central Alaska. This is the Knik Glacier located at the East end of the Mat-Su Valley. It feeds the Knik River, which is a very cold river. Even in the Summer time, only the top foot gets heated by the sun, and the rest of the water is ice cold. The Colony Glacier is also visible from the Knik terminus. This corner of the valley is in a rain shadow from the Chugach Mountains, and receives significantly less precipitation than the rest of the valley. The Spruce trees are noticeably stunted, and can be half the size of trees just a few miles away.
