Anyone need a ladder?

Artist Paola Pivi has one that’s about 65 feet tall, inflatable, and cartoony-colored.

It looks great leaning against gray palace facades, with lots of weathered arches and faded, fluted columns.

9 years ago, in Florence, that disparity popped.

Now the ladder is back, leaning against another palace, in Paris, doing its contemporary-versus-classic thing.

We’re likely to see it again.

Because Pivi’s simple, deadpan ladder is surprisingly effective and efficient at dialing up the contrast between distant, divergent places, times, and cultures.

The Details

Paola Pivi’s ladder first showed up in Florence, at the Palazzo Strozzi, in late 2015.
