This region of Iceland has some of the most dramatic views to offer: Including breath-taking canyons

Gorgeous gigantic waterfalls, which are a force of nature and, sleeping volcanic craters reminding us of the violent forces that shaped this landscape

we're talking about the Highlands, and we'll show you how to visit this area in a single day

We start by driving on Road 26, Also known as Landvegur,
Surrounded by miles of Lupine flowers, its one of the most beautiful roads in Iceland, before turning east to drive on our first F-road or Fjall Road - F225

and, after a couple of easy river crossings, we reach our first destination -
Stútur crater

Created thousands of years ago, by explosive eruptions caused by magma interacting with groundwater, it is 300m in diameter

the crater is next to the Frostastaðavatn lake, and Surrounded by vast lava fields, barren plateaus, and rugged mountains

you can also climb to the top of the crater for some amazing views

Just across this valley and a short drive away is our next destination - Landmannalaugar

To access the campsite, you need to cross another river which requires a vehicle with good ground clearance, or you can park right before the crossing and walk across a temporary bridge

Its part of the Fjallabak Nature Reserve and a highly geo-thermal area with geysers and hot springs scattered throughout.

You can even take a dip in one of these hot springs

but, What its most famous for are these glacial rivers which look like veins of the earth

while in the area, do check out the Laugahraun Lava Field which is literally a mountain of solidified lava that you can trek through

Time to head to the next place on our list which is a true wonder of nature

We took the most beautiful F Road in Iceland - F208, which cuts through dense lava fields, surrounded by snow capped mountains

and arrived at Sigöldugljúfur - one of the most spectacular canyons in Iceland

The sheer number of waterfalls in this canyon is astounding, giving it the nickname Valley of Tears

The canyon didn't always look like this. It was mostly filled with water from the Tungnaá river before the Sigala dam was built upriver and changed the landscape dramatically

As the sun started to set and we had another place to visit, we continued along the F208 and reached Haifoss

A short trek from the car park, it's is one of Iceland's most dramatic and tallest waterfalls

Haifoss has a neighboring waterfall called Granni (which means "Neighbor" in Icelandic) and together they create a striking pair

The waterfalls drain into a deep canyon with multi-coloured cliffs

Haifoss is created by the Fossá River plunging 122 meters down a sheer cliff.

This is one place where you cannot help being humbled by the power of nature

It was time to head back for the day. The drive back was one of the best drives of our life

We saw a brilliant sunset and The sky was on fire. Coupled with the otherworldly landscape and the steam rising from geo thermal vents, everything looked just surreal
