(EN) Silves is situated 18 Km from Portimão (Algarve Portugal). The first fortifications where is the castle today were built upon a possible Lusitanian castro by the Romans or the Visigoths. From the year 716, the castle was occupied by the moors until 1253 when portuguese forces took definitively the Castle. The towers and walls we can visit today came from the public works by the Moors in the 12th and 13th centuries. During the Lisbon earthquake on 1st November 1755, some walls of the castle were damaged as well as the cathedral but reconstructed a few years later. A visit to the remains of the Palace of the Balconies where lived the Arab poet Al-Mutamid is recommended. The large underground cistern was used until 1920 to provide freshwater to Silves. As primeiras fortificações onde hoje está o castelo foram construídas sobre um possível castro Lusitano pelos romanos ou os visigodos. Desde o ano 716 o castelo foi ocupado pelos mouros até 1253 quando as forças portuguesas o tomaram definitivamente . As torres e paredes que podemos visitar hoje vieram das construções que os mouros fizeram nos séculos XII e XIII. Durante o terremoto de Lisboa em 1 de novembro de 1755, algumas torres e paredes do castelo ficaram danificadas, assim como a catedral, mas foram reconstruídas alguns anos depois. Recomendamos uma visita aos restos do Palácio das Varandas, onde viveu o poeta árabe Al-Mutamid. A grande cisterna subterrânea foi usada até 1920 para fornecer água doce a Silves.
