How do you turn a basically stock GR86 into a podium-winning competition drift car? You install tow hooks and a fire extinguisher, to pass tech inspection :).

Now to be fair, this event was closer to autocross than to a standard drift competition. The only "judging criterion" was that a run is invalid if you don't link the course in one drift. Otherwise it was just about the fastest time, with penalties for hitting cones/barrels (I managed to avoid that the whole day, I'm happy to report - not a scratch on the car). I obviously entered in the lowest class ("street"), and out of 8 participants I placed 3rd (https://www.drifting.cz/online-vysled... ).

When the goal is to go as fast as possible while drifting, the best strategy is to just barely drift. To get a good time, it comes down almost entirely to tyres, I'd say (especially on a course like this). Good semislicks, at (very) low pressure, properly warmed up - with that, probably any car that entered could win. Big power isn't necessary, even with grippy tyres, when all that's needed is to just barely hold drift in 1st gear. I did have semislicks, but only in the rear, and they were one event old - I was surprised how much grip they lost since then.

Oh yeah, and then there's also the actual driving :). I tried my best not to overspin the tyres (as seen in the throttle telemetry, it's just constant pedalling), and to keep as tight as possible around the barrels... and that's about all there is to it, I'd say. In my fastest competition run I screwed up the first cone (2:10), but it still ended up faster than the first run, which had no major mistakes - perhaps because the tyres were better warmed after the first run.

The course was, on one hand, nothing special - just four barrels - but on the other hand, it was quite special thanks to the circumstances. On the main straight of an actual race track, next to the pit wall... and then the competition held after dark, with the pyro effects - it was a cool experience. This location was only possible because the track was about to be resurfaced for the next season.

Telemetry recorded and rendered with RaceChrono, synced by hand. Everything except GPS speed is captured from the car, GPS is from a smartphone (so low accuracy).
