For many Portlanders, "home sweet home” consumes a not-so-sweet portion of their monthly paychecks. Since 1970, Portland has gone from being one of the most affordable housing markets in the nation to one of the least affordable. The average household income has risen 42 percent while housing costs have risen 100 percent. At the same time, the affordable housing system serving Portland and Multnomah County provides assistance to only about one-third of eligible low-income households. What effects do these statistics have on our City, and what can be done about it? This week, City Club presents its two-year study on affordable housing in Portland. In addition, the Club will host three panelists, who will discuss the past, present, and future of affordable housing in our fair City. Susan Emmons will provide background on the condition of affordable housing in Portland today—its history, trends, and challenges. Next, Steven Rudman will give an overview of federal funding and its role in the future of local housing options. Finally, Erik Sten will discuss creative strategies the City is undertaking to address affordable housing issues. Come to City Club this week and learn why home, for many, is where worry is.
