Rajasthan ACB takes back order prohibiting releasing names & photos of bribery accused

The Rajasthan Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has withdrawn an order that prohibited the publication or broadcast of the names and photographs of people accused of bribery or corruption.

The order, dated November 13, had been issued by the bureau’s director-general and had barred the media from publishing and broadcasting the names and photographs of people accused of bribery or corruption.

The order had drawn criticism from the media, who said it was a violation of the right to freedom of expression and press freedom.

Following the criticism, the ACB has now issued an order withdrawing the earlier order.

“In view of the representations received and after the consideration, the earlier order issued by the Anti-Corruption Bureau, Rajasthan, dated 13.11.2020, is hereby withdrawn,” the new order said.

The ACB has also clarified that the earlier order was intended to protect the integrity of investigations and was not intended to restrict the freedom of the press.
