An American folk song about the murder of Billy Lyons by "Stag" Lee Shelton in St. Louis, Missouri, at Christmas 1895. The song was first published in 1911 and first recorded in 1923, by Fred Waring's Pennsylvanians, titled "Stack O' Lee Blues". A version by Lloyd Price reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1959.

Wilbert Huntington Harrison (1/5/29 – 10/26/94) was an American rhythm and blues singer, pianist, guitarist and harmonica player born in Charlotte, North Carolina, who had a Billboard #1 record in 1959 with the song "Kansas City" for which he was named as one of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's singers of the 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.

Here, he performs "Stagger Lee", the A side of his Vinyl, 7", 45 RPM, Single, Promo, 4 Prong Push Out Centre record from London Records' HL 10307, American Recordings released in UK Mar 26, 1970, the flip side of which. being "Let's Work Together" that went to #32 in early 1970 on the Billboard Hot 100, originally released by Harrison in 1962.

Robinson's career was impeded by litigation from Savoy Records over a contract dispute that abruptly prevented him from issuing follow-ups to his number 1 "Kansas City" chart-topping hit while he was a star. Harrison died of a stroke in 1994.
