Intel reveals the past and predicts the future of the Xeon Phi in this video featuring Intel's Software Products Director and Multi-core Evangelist, James Reinders (right) and its director of marketing, Joe Curley (left). The duo first recounts how Intel's many-integrated core (MIC) concept was conceived and implemented as the Xeon Phi coprocessor--from the research it conducted to explore the perceived need for a single-chip supercomputer to the reaction of the programmers who found niches Intel never conceived. And for the future, they espouse Intel's aspiration to literally improve the life of everyone on the planet, by helping them solve their most important problem of every scale with future standalone MICs. Future Xeon Phi models, for instance, will augment the coprocessor concept with a variety of single-chip central-processing units (CPUs) priced for every user's budget and with however many cores are needed for their specific problem.
