Program notes
Conflict: Concerto for Euphonium was written in the Summer of 2019 as a
consortium consisting of 25 individuals. The approximate duration is 20 minutes,
with three movements and a virtuosic cadenza. Rather than following the traditional
concerto format of “fast slow fast” each movement consists of both technical and
lyrical sections. The movements in order are entitled:

Man vs. Self
Man vs. Nature
Man vs. Man

Each movement has events of peace, turmoil, rebuilding, and destruction. Man vs.
Self was inspired by both observation and realization of self deprecative behavior.
Man vs. Nature paints an anxious view towards the destruction of nature by man
made machine. The cadenza between the 2nd and 3rd movement is supposed to be
an internal battle that becomes external when it loses control and spirals towards a
violent march in Man vs. Man.
