The Resolution Extraction Machine malfunctioned when used improperly, causing it to backfire. As a result, it absorbed the monsters' meagre resolve and magic, effectively wiping out nearly all of the underground world's allies.
It also absorbed a small amount of resolve from humans on the surface. A significant amount of energy remains residual within the machine, from which Sans draws his power (though only slightly stronger than the original Dusttale).
Gaster is also deceased, yet continues to guide Sans as a phantom even in death.
Papyrus was promptly revived by Sans and returned from his state as a ‘Wandering Soul’, but now aids Sans from afar, fearing the machine.
Some of the ‘Humans'’ resolve has also been absorbed to a degree, representing the resolve extraction performed before combat in the original CotV.

✯UB(Killer) / Betrayer imitation: New struggle for survival
Having emerged onto the surface, the characters found most of their companions vanished due to betrayal.
However, miraculously, the usual boss monsters (Sans, Undyne, Azgoa, etc.) managed to survive.
Yet unable to live a normal life, they resolved to become assassins and survive within the underworld.
Sans, soon corrupted by the thrill of killing, shot down even his own comrades. He then approached Chara, proposing they become assassins together.
But of course, far from accepting, Chara remained silent and attempted to slash him. The fight began.

✯TITR(Horror) / Neutral Run imitation: Tragic Revolutionary
Until Undyne killed Sans for the sake of her broken core, it was the same as ‘Horrortale’. However, when Undyne went to deliver the final blow to Sans, Papyrus shielded him and died in the process.
Consumed by rage, she instantly killed Undyne and began indiscriminately slaughtering the surrounding monsters and other humans who later fell from above.
Given its origins, there are no detailed settings. It's merely a slightly improved version of ‘Horrortale’.
