My Dad, Brother and I are planning to build a small off grid cabin deep into our property. We already have a pretty simple design idea, which will use resources that are locally aquired and will also use all used and reclaimed materials, where they can be found. With that, we needed a way to get into the area where the cabin is to be built and a small creek was in our path. I do try to live a frugal lifestyle, so I used some 8-12' trees that were in the area for the beams. I did break down and buy some treated 2x6s for the decking because I wasn't too keen on falling through. in hindsight, I do wish i would have taken the time to debark the logs and to coat them with some sort of preservative. An elderly gentlemen told me to use used motor oil, but I like to consider myself to be enviromentally friendly and opted to skip that step. I think i'll just take my chances with them rotting out, and will keep a close eye on them. I do think that I will easily get 5 years of use out of them before the beams have to be replaced. All in all, I have approximately $100 in this project. I'm happy to have a small bridge to walk across in high water, and to use to transport materials to the work site.
