After a stretch of silence and string of excuses made to myself, something finally clicked to overcome my inertia.

Last night, timeless words from Joel Arthur Barker echoed in my head, “Vision without action is merely a dream. Action without vision just passes the time. Vision with action can change the world.” Every day, reading grim and foreboding news about Ukraine made me more apprehensive about the future, and every day the pressures at work continue to occupy my mind. But in the end, perhaps it was a personal message that finally tipped me over.

“With heavy heart, I regret to inform you that my father passed a couple of hours ago.”

I was suddenly reminded of what I believe, that peace on Earth is not only possible but necessary for the future of our species and for the afterlife that so many have imagined. I can wait for more money, wait for more authority, wait for more influence, but …

In the meantime, Russia and China are demonstrating the strength of authoritarian regimes against more open and democratic alternatives. Unmanned drones are being deployed effectively in theaters of war, bringing back vivid scenes from the Slaughterbots video. And private companies are investing in space travel instead of solving problems on the one habitable planet we know.

Luckily, I have the opportunity now to practice what I’ve been preaching to my children: no excuses. I know what I have to do, and it’s on me to list my excuses and strike them out one by one. Starting with the first one: My tech is weak. The truth is, I actually have good tech that’s just been stashed away in a bookshelf somewhere in my thousand-square-foot home. And the bigger truth is that it’s more important to start producing than to fret about the zero listeners who aren’t there to complain.
