This segment explains the poetic forms such as heroic couplet, blank verse and free verse. Heroic couplet is the poetic form introduced into English by Chaucer. It is a rhyming couplet in iambic pentameter. Blank verse which is brought into English by Henry Howard is a poetic form which is written in unrhymed lines with a consistent meter which is iambic pentameter predominantly. In free verse there is an absence of standard meter and rhyme scheme. This verse form is adopted by many writers earlier but the American writer Walt Whitman is credited with introducing it in English language poetry in his work Leaves of Grass.
