North Korea's growing provocations took center stage at this year's Asia Security Summit,... where participants reaffirmed the need to boost international cooperation in defense.
In an opening speech,... U.S. Secretary of Defense James Mattis called Pyongyang a "clear and present danger to the world,"... adding that Washington will closely work with countries in the region.

"We are working transparently in unison with the Republic of Korea to defend against the growing threats imposed by North Korea's aggressive and destabilizing nuclear ballistic missile and nuclear programs. Our commitment to the defense of the Republic of Korea and Japan to include the employment of our most advanced capabilities is ironclad."

South Korea's Defense chief Han Min-Koo,... who led the Seoul delegation,... sat down with his foreign counterparts to discuss the seriousness of the North Korea issue and stress the need for closer international cooperation.
During trilateral talks between Seoul, Washington and Tokyo on the sidelines,... the three condemned North Korea's nuclear and missile development,... and decided to step up joint drills as well as share information.
In a bilateral meeting with U.S. Secretary of Defense James Mattis, Minister Han conveyed the new Moon Jae-in administration's position on the THAAD missile defense system being installed in Korea,... after renewed controversy that raised doubts about Seoul's commitment.

"I emphasized that the measures the South Korean government has taken regarding THAAD are completely a domestic concern, and that there's no intention on the part of Seoul to change what's already been agreed. We wish to resolve the matter according to the spirit of the South Korea-U.S. alliance."
