Turkey’s iconic Hagía Sophía Grand Mosque reopened for worship on Friday for the first time in 86 years. Some 350,000 people attended the Friday prayer around Hagia Sophia.
The opening of Ayasofya’s Friday prayer on 24 July 2020 coincided with the 97th anniversary of the signature of the Treaty of Lausanne, the treaty between Turkey and world powers.

As part of the preparations, 17 health-check points with 736 medical personnel actively worked alongside an ambulance unit consisting of 101 vehicles and a helicopter waiting nearby. Visitors' temperatures were also checked and face masks were mandatory.

The architectural marvel was turned into a museum in 1934 by a decree from the Cabinet of Turkish leader Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. Few days ago, on July 10, a Turkish court annulled a 1934 Cabinet decree that had turned Hagia Sophia into a museum, paving the way for its use again as a mosque after an 86-year hiatus.
As described below: the iconic monument Ayasofya served as a church for 916 years until the conquest of Istanbul by the young Ottoman Sultan Muhammad II aka Fatih Sultan Mehmet (also commonly known as Mehmed the Conqueror) at the age of 21, bringing an end to the Byzantine Empire. It then served as a mosque from 1453 to 1934 – nearly 500 years – and most recently as a museum for 86 years.
