⚡ Building a Custom LED Drum Setup – Project Breakdown

This is not just a drum cover — it’s the story behind building a custom electronic and LED-based drum setup from scratch.

The idea started with a simple question:
How can rhythm be translated into light?

I began by designing and testing a custom LED system that reacts visually during the performance. I experimented with different electronic components and LED models — some didn’t respond correctly, others failed during testing, and a few behaved unpredictably. After several rounds of trial and error, I finally arrived at a stable and responsive setup.

The electronic and hardware side of this project took approximately two weeks to design, test, and finalize.
After that, I spent nearly a full month focusing on the drum performance itself — dialing in the sound, timing, dynamics, and overall feel to stay as true as possible to the original TOOL groove.

This video (Part 1) focuses on the concept, experimentation, and technical process behind building the custom LED drum setup.
Part 2 will focus on the full performance and final visual result.

This drum + light system works with any drum setup.
