Opposition parties in Parliament have again said that South Africa is facing a water crisis, and they're calling on national government to acknowledge this.

Water and Sanitation Minister Pemmy Majodina today delivered a statement in the National Assembly to address water security in the country.

She cited demand escalation, inefficient use of water, degradation of wetlands, and impact of climate change, as reasons for the deterioration of water availability.

Majodina says it's critical that South Africa's water resource mix be broadened.

And she has called on South Africans to change their behaviour and treat water like the scarce resource it is.

She's called on municipalities to play their role.
