My colleague gave his teenagers an allowance to outsource their homework.

Not to cheat the system, not to give them less work, but rather to learn a really valuable skill for their future - what and how to outsource work.

And this was in 2010 - before we had platforms like Upwork and Fiverr , but he did this because he understood that the 'gig economy' was coming and he wanted his daughters to have the skills they would need in the future.

And now? Well, now I actually outsource some of our team's video editing to his one daughter - because not only does she have amazing editing skills, she is also a pleasure to work with as a freelancer.

I am also a terrible delegater - so outsourcing work is hard for me - no matter how much sense it makes. I'm learning, but gosh I wish I had been given the space and permission to learn these skills earlier in my life because in 2026, as someone who is a partner in a small business, outsourcing certain tasks, and managing that process is very much a part of what I do.

The world needs us to be brave enough to do things differently as we parent our kids, rather than continuing to do things the way we have always done them..... just because that's what we've always known.

This story is truly what started our journey of parenting differently. It's what gave us the confidence and permission to be ok with experimenting with different ways of doing things.

So - I ask you - what would you do differently for your kids education if you gave yourself the permission, and had the confidence to do so?
