Putin Expands Africa Influence, Backs Khalil Haftar's Libyan Forces | Firstpost Africa

Russian Deputy Defense Minister Yunus-Bek Yevkurov has pledged to enhance the capabilities of the Libyan Eastern Forces led by Khalifa Haftar. The pledge was made during a meeting between the Russian official and Haftar, who is the general commander of the Libyan Eastern Forces, in Benghazi in eastern Libya. Forces led by Haftar are those belonging to the eastern of the country’s two parliaments and Russian President Vladimir Putin has been backing them since at least 2018, through the private military contractor Wagner. And now, as Moscow expands its footprint in Libya, Africa has become the latest playground for an intensifying geopolitical rivalry between Russia and the US.
