Witnesses reported seeing fireballs soaring into the sky and flames reaching 15 stories in height. The explosions destroyed roads, snagged and overturned cars and fire trucks, and caused a power outage. About 6 km of the road was damaged. It is reported that as a result of the explosions, cars and motorcycles flew high into the air; some vehicles and victims were found on the roofs of buildings three or four stories high. One street was blocked along its entire length, which is why fire trucks and other vehicles were piling up on it.
Jiang Yihua, the prime minister, said there had been at least five explosions in the city. As a result of the explosions, 23,600 households were left without gas, 12,000 households without electricity, and 8,000 households without water.
Firefighters from Kaohsiung City, Chiayi City, Pingtung County, Tainan City and Taitung County arrived at the scene to extinguish the fires and help rescuers. Some firefighters also sprayed water on the roads in hopes of lowering the ground temperature.[10] Four firefighters were killed during the incident, two of them were missing; 22 other emergency personnel were also injured in the explosions. The Taiwanese army was also dispatched to the scene and arrived there within two hours of the first explosion.
That night, emergency rooms in Kaohsiung hospitals were overflowing with injured people, most of whom suffered cuts and burns. Some of the injured had to be transported to hospitals by trucks due to a shortage of ambulances. All the injured were sent to more than 20 hospitals across the city, including Chung Ho Memorial Hospital, Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital, Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Yuan General Hospital, Main Military Hospital and Kaohsiung Joint Municipal Hospital.
