International seminar with european and U.S. decision-makers, Volvo group, Ovako, SSAB, International Organization For Standardization, United Nations Industrial Development Organization, Silverado Policy Accelerator and International Energy Agency.

On May 15th, Jernkontoret and the Swedish Institute for Standards, SIS, invite you to a hybrid seminar to address the needs, challenges, and way forward for decarbonization standards in the steel sector. We are happy to welcome keynote speaker Håkan Jevrell, State secretary to the Swedish Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade. The seminar will be moderated by Åsa Ekdahl at the World Steel Association.

The green transition agenda is a top priority for many countries worldwide, for Europe and for Sweden, which currently holds the presidency of the EU. Iron and steel production accounts for approximately 7 per cent of annual CO2 emissions. The common understanding is that decarbonization of the steel industry is necessary to reach the goals of the climate agenda.

However, what are the challenges ahead? At least 40 different initiatives and fora are dealing with the issue of measuring emissions and footprints, setting targets, defining net-zero-emissions, and verifying reductions, but these serve different purposes. The situation creates fragmented markets, uncertainty and restricts trade.

In the seminar, the need for, and purpose of, coherent international decarbonization standards in the steel sector will be addressed. The seminar provides an opportunity for a dialogue on how decarbonization standards can best be achieved from a global point of view and who might take this work forward.
