Damian Wilson - Battlelines (Live in Breda)

One night I had a dream that truly filled me with terror. I stood on the frontline trenches of World War One, facing the enemy troops and it felt completely real. I sensed the despair and desperation of my imminent death, by a shower of bullets. The sheer madness of war; I question why or how any human being could ever chose to put themselves or another person in that position.

The song came to me when I was out running. As is so often the case, the melody and lyrics just appeared in my head. At the first opportunity I scribbled down the lyric and recorded the melody but it seemed too simple. After some thought, I realised that although simple the message still stood true.

I don’t classify myself as a pacifist as I do believe we are genetically programmed to defend ourselves. Whilst battling is a positive part and a necessity to our existence and survival as a species, I see no justification for war.
