Welcome Back to my channel and in this Video I am sharing A potato Experiment which is based on the reaction Of salt, Chemical Properties of Salt and much more.

Materials -
2 shallow containers
A potato
Table salt
A knife
Water

STEPS

Step 1 - Cut the potato into 🥔two halves lengthwise.

Step 2 - Fill two shallow containers with water.

Step 3 - Add about two tablespoons of salt to one of the containers to make a salt solution.

Step 4 - Place half a potato in each container (Flat side down ) , one in the salt solution and the other in plain water.

Step 5 - Leave the halves soaking for about two hours.

Step 6 - Turn the pieces of Potato over. The piece of potato in the plain water stays firm and rigid but the piece of potato in the salt water will become soft and shriveled .

Mess up Guidelines - Its a little messy.

Time Required - About 2 hours 30 minutes.

Adult supervision is required for cutting potatoes ( if you're a kid ).

THE REASON BEHIND WHY IT HAPPENED

A potato is made up of small units called cells. A cell has a thin membrane surrounding it that protects it. This membrane is semipermeable , means it allows only certain substances to pass through it.
Across a semipermeable membrane, water naturally moves from a region of high concentration to a region with low concentration of water molecules, till the number of molecules on both sides is equal. .
When you place the potato in the container with plain water , the concentration of water molecules is more than the molecules in the potato. Water moves into the potato and it becomes stiff.
When you place the potato in the salt solution , the concentration of water inside the potato is higher than the salt solution. The water therefore moves out of the potato and into the salt solution and the potato shrinks and becomes soft and shriveled.
