How Hungary Finally Crushed the Mongols (1241-1285) | Battle of Mohi (FULL PARTS). In 1223, the Mongol Empire delivered a crushing blow to the Cumans and their allies, the Kievan Rus, at the Battle of Kalka River. This victory shocked Europe, making it clear that the Mongols were a serious threat. Their reputation as a ruthless, unstoppable force spread quickly, striking fear into the hearts of European kingdoms. By the early 1240s, the Mongol Empire had grown significantly, stretching from the Asian steppes to the borders of Eastern Europe.
How Hungary Finally Crushed the Mongols (1241-1285) | Battle of Mohi (FULL PARTS). During this time, King Béla IV of Hungary made a bold decision—he gave refuge to a large group of Cumans who were fleeing from the Mongols. The Cumans, a nomadic Turkic people, had been one of the last groups trying to hold off the Mongols in the steppes, but they couldn’t stop them. When Hungary offered the Cumans protection, the Mongols saw it as a direct insult. To them, the Cumans were enemies, and by harboring them, Hungary had crossed a line. This gave the Mongols a reason to retaliate.
In late 1240, Batu Khan, grandson of Genghis Khan and one of the most powerful Mongol leaders, sent a message to King Béla IV, demanding that he expel the Cumans. This wasn’t the first time Batu had made such a demand—he had sent one earlier that Béla ignored. Still, Béla refused, likely thinking his kingdom could either withstand the Mongol threat or that the Mongols wouldn’t follow through. But his defiance enraged Batu, who decided to strike back.
How Hungary Finally Crushed the Mongols (1241-1285) | Battle of Mohi (FULL PARTS). By March 1241, the Mongol army was on the move. Batu Khan led the campaign, while the famous general Subotai handled the strategy. In true Mongol fashion, the army split into three groups, each with its own mission. Subotai led the main force into Hungary. Another group, under Kadan, moved through Lithuania and into Poland to prevent any reinforcements from reaching Hungary. The third group, commanded by Qutuz, moved into Transylvania, cutting off support from the south.
On April 9, 1241, Kadan’s forces scored a major victory at the Battle of Legnica in Poland. This win wiped out a coalition of European forces, including the Polish army and the Teutonic Knights, and it ensured no help would arrive for Hungary. Meanwhile, Qutuz’s forces took control of Transylvania, further isolating Béla’s kingdom. With Poland and Transylvania under Mongol control, all eyes turned to Hungary’s heartland, where the Mongols were ready to launch their final assault.
King Béla IV and his army, worn out from a week of marching and fighting Mongol raiders, finally reached the River Sajó, preparing for the battle that lay ahead.
