What is Auditory Discrimination
The ability to hear and differentiate two sounds

Why do we need it?
differentiate between similar phonemes(sounds) in words
affects reading, spelling, writing
gives children the capacity to form clearer sounds in their own speech - working on discrimination is one of the activities done for older children who have articulation errors (mispronounciation).

Adapting this activity as per age (skills)
I am purposely not giving a specific age as there may be a variability in skill set and I don't want to introduce comparison for anyone.
young baby- don't need any special preparation - just have single boxes filled with different items and let them explore (almost like rattles)- can use existing kitchen spice dubbas - we did this with K and it helped distract him when cranky.
young toddler- just introduce them to different sounding boxes- the sound in box A and box B sounds same or different.
once they get this concept- start with two pairs- see if they can match - don't pressurise them as it will take time just like it does with visual matching- use boxes with varied difference in sound like rice vs sooji
as they understand this, move to items which sound similar - rice and methi, jeera and tea leaves etc.
for an older child you can even allow them to add items into the box and help them figure out the science behind it.

Whenever your child is ready you can use attributes of sound like loud, soft, high pitch, low pitch (shrill and bass).

Extra Tips-
Don't forget to do this in a quiet room.
do the activity if it interests your child- else they might not benefit if forced- K loves shakers so he loves it so far.
you can use rhymes which have the use of shaking (or adapt existing rhymes to suit need).
I got the boxes on Amazon a while back but with Sankranti around the corner you might get it cheap locally.
