The Gilson HM-504A Pocket Shear Vane Set (Torvane) rapidly measures approximate shear strength of cohesive soils in the field or lab in accordance with ASTM D8121. (This standard does not supplement or replace D4648)

This rugged shear vane set includes an All-metal driver with calibrated torsion spring and integral scale, three vanes for different types of shear strength testing, a carrying case with belt loop, and an allen wrench to secure vanes to the unit.

And the scale read from 0—1kg/cm² in 0.05kg/cm² divisions (1 kg/cm² is approximately equal to 1tsf).

Each vane has a unique multiplier that when multiplied against the indicated test value, will give us the approximate shear strength of the soil sample.

The standard one inch (25.4mm) vane has a multiplier of one. The smaller 3/4in (19mm) vane is meant for use with stiffer soils and has a multiplier of 2.5. And the larger 1 7/8in (47.6mm) vane is used for softer soils and has a multiplier of 0.2.

In use, the HM-504A is pressed into the soil, and the knob is rotated slowly until the soil matrix fails within 5 to 10 seconds. A reading is retained on the scale and is then multiplied by the factor associated with the vane used to obtain the approximate undrained shear strength of the soil sample.
