Two digital outcrop models, collected 5 years apart, of the Jurassic-age cliffs near Staithes, NE England were compared in this study.
A Phantom 4 #drone was used to survey the cliffs in October 2017, while the DJI Mini Pro 3 was used in October 2022 to test its capabilities and compare the data. Despite varying conditions and hardware, clear evidence of #erosion on the cliffs emerged during data processing. Repositioning and correction stages aligned the datasets, revealing significant differences. The 2017 dataset of 500 images captured with the DJI Phantom 4, shows an erosion-prone cliff section. The 2022 survey, using the DJI Mini Pro 3, displayed improved color balance and comprises 221 images. Blending the 2022 model with a difference attribute highlighted areas of erosion up to 2.5m. This experiment demonstrates the potential for tracking coastal erosion through repeat drone surveys, even with basic equipment.
