প্রথম বিশ্বযুদ্ধের সময় অটোমান সাম্রাজ্যের ক্ষমতা পতনের পর সৌদি আরবের প্রতিষ্ঠাতা ইবনে সৌদ নিজেকে নজদের রাজা হিসেবে ঘোষণা করেন। ১৯২৫ সালে তিনি হাশেমিদের কাছ থেকে হেজাজের নিয়ন্ত্রণ গ্রহণ করেন। ১৯৩২ সালে তিনি নজদ ও হেজাজ রাজ্যদুটি একত্র করার ঘোষণা দেন এবং এভাবে সৌদি আরবের প্রতিষ্ঠা হয়। বেশিরভাগ সীমানাই অচিহ্নিত ছিল এবং নির্দিষ্ট কোন মানচিত্রও ছিলনা ও চুক্তি দ্বারা অনির্দিষ্ট ছিল।
১৯৩২ সাল নাগাদ ইবনে সৌদ ইয়েমেন বাদে প্রায় সব আরব এলাকা নিজের নিয়ন্ত্রণে এনেছিলেন এবং এছাড়া ছোট্ট উপকূলীয় রাজ্যগুলোও তার নিয়ন্ত্রণের বাইরে ছিল, যেগুলো ব্রিটিশদের নিয়ন্ত্রণে ছিল (ওমান, কুয়েত, বাহরাইন, এডেন ইত্যাদি)। হেজাজ ও ইয়েমেনের মধ্যে বিভিন্ন উপজাতীয় অঞ্চল ছিল যার উপর পূর্বে অটোমানরা দুর্বল সার্বভৌমত্ব ধরে রেখেছিল এবং ইবনে সৌদ ও ইয়েমেনের ইমাম উভয়েরই এই ভূখন্ডগুলোর নিয়ন্ত্রণ নেয়ার আকাঙ্ক্ষা ছিল।
