The search for the Trader has yielded nothing but absence. Empty villages. Broken patterns. Lives reduced to rumors and loss. Mitsuhide’s shadow stretches farther than any blade, and the weight of it presses into every road I ride. I feel it settling into my shoulders, into my breath. If I am to continue, I must remember why I fight—and who I was before all of this.
So I turn back. Back to where everything ended. And where something else began. I ride toward Iga.
Snow blankets the roads, softening the world. Each hoofbeat echoes gently, the sound carrying memories I did not know I still held. These roads are familiar. These trees. I remember running here as a child, chasing deer through the undergrowth, climbing where I was told not to climb. I remember fear—not of the world, but of disappointing my father. Still, curiosity always pulled harder.
The Suzuka Foothills open before me, quiet and vast. I let the wind speak while I listen. Bandits clash with soldiers in the distance, but they pass like storms I no longer feel compelled to chase. For now, I simply ride.
Crossing into Iga, the weight of the road lifts—and another replaces it. Time presses down here. Memory. Loss. Mibuno Castle looms as it always has, silent and watchful. Then my village comes into view, wrapped in fresh snow. Clean. Still.
I stop at our small shrine and leave an offering. Gratitude. Remembrance. Not prayers—those feel unnecessary here. I ride on, passing Kasuga Shrine. The monks walk their paths in quiet contemplation, heads bowed. I do not feel my ancestors here anymore. Perhaps they have moved on. Or perhaps I have.
The village feels changed. Faces I do not know. Homes that are gone. Life reshaped by fire and time. I realize then that this place no longer belongs to me—not as it once did.
I climb to a familiar vantage point, scaling the great tree where I once trained. From above, the land unfolds as it always has: fields, shrine, fortress. But the life I lived here is gone. Washed away by war.
I do not mourn it. I remember it.
This was my home. But my home now is elsewhere. With Tomiko. With Junjiro. With Yasuke. With those who walk this path beside me.
For this moment, the weight lifts. The road ahead will demand more of me. But here, beneath falling snow, I am at peace.
For now.
