CINCINNATI (WKRC) – The latest health care system getting hit hard by the shutdowns during this pandemic is TriHealth.

The company told employees that up to 440 positions will be eliminated, mainly from support staff and management positions. At least 150 of those positions at the hospital and health care offices are open positions that will not be filled.

For other positions, some employees will be reassigned or retrained for jobs that are still essential.

The president and CEO of TriHealth, Mark Clement, said it’s all due to the shutdown and the slow return to care, even when they reopened.

“The consequence of that, most importantly, is that lives are being lost,” said Clement. “That patients are sicker and it's sometimes much more difficult to treat them with more acute conditions. The secondary consequence for that is we are operating at 90% to 95% of previous baselines, meaning pre-COVID-19 activity levels and revenue. For TriHealth, just a 5% reduction from where we were in the past represents $100 million in revenue.”

“These changes will have zero impact on our patients. We will continue to provide the appropriate level of staffing. All of these position eliminations are occurring outside of critical care. In our support areas, revenue cycle, human resources, information technology, critical services but play supportive roles to our direct-patient care areas, so this will have no impact on our patient care at the bedside,” said Clement.

Employees who are impacted by these cuts are expected to be notified in the next few weeks.
