In narco analysis, sodium pentathal is given in huge quantity which, in turn, results in the person to lose control on his mind and enter into various stages of anaesthesia.

The findings of the narco test are not admissible as evidence in the trial except any disclosure made under section 27 of the Indian Evidence Act,1872. So, what is the purpose of such test?

The test is done primarily to aid the investigating agency in connecting the dots which could lead them to other evidences which are directly admissible as evidence. It is a great tool of investigation to get vital clues to take the probe into right direction. However, the Court does not grant the permission to conduct unless it believes that there is no other way to ascertain the truth.

Further, such test cannot be done without the valid consent of the person. An involuntary narco test has been held unconstitutional on the grounds of violation of right to mental privacy provided under article 21 and right to remain silent provided under article 20(3) of the Constitution of India.
