The Great Lake (alternatively known as the Black Lake) is a large body of water located to the south of Hogwarts Castle. The lake is full of creatures that would make a Muggle naturalist swoon with delight — if terror did not seize them first... *CLICK TO VIEW MORE*

Every school year at Hogwarts, after the Hogwarts Express arrives at Hogsmeade Station, Rubeus Hagrid (or a substitute) calls the first years to follow him to the lake shore and the magic boats. Whereupon Hagrid occupies one boat and each other boat carries up to four students. The boats then self-propels across the lake to a dock under Hogwarts Castle as per tradition.

Do you hear the distance song of mermaids and wings of Thestrals? There are Grindylows (vicious little water demons), Selkies (of a hardy Scottish strain) and a Giant Squid, which is semi-domesticated and permits students to tickle its tentacles on sunny days, when it basks in the shallows...

But it's a quiet evening now, students are still working in the library and common rooms (you know Hermione is, and reluctantly - Harry and Ron), but the chilly air of late autumn cooled down the grounds, and early night fall has came. Enjoy the peaceful night with light rain, but don't get too comfortable...the Giant Squid might be friendly but there are other creatures stirring now...
