The column is one of the important structural members of the building. it is a vertical slender compression member mainly subjected to compression loading, but occasional bending or tension may also occur.
on the basis of failure pattern #column can be divided into three classes.
Short Column: A column that fails by the crushing of its material is called a short column. its length is less than 15 times its width and its slenderness ratio is less than 80.
Long Column: A column that fails by buckling under the action of compression loading. length is greater than 15 times its width and the slenderness ratio is greater than 80.
Intermediate Column: A column that fails by the combination of both crushing and buckling is called an intermediate column.
Strut: A compression member horizontal or inclined is called a strut.
