This is the 3rd talk of STSCMPhys, being delivered by Sagnik Chaudhuri, who is a PhD student from the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science(IACS), Kolkata.

The talk was delivered on the 7th of October, 2020.

Abstract :

The existence of superpositions of pure quantum states is one of the most intriguing features of quantum mechanics. The importance of quantum superpositions leads to questions about the restrictions that quantum mechanics itself imposes on the possibility of their generation.
In my talk, I will attempt to give a systematic discussion of the problem of creation of superpositions of unknown quantum states. The talk will be based on a paper entitled `Creation of superposition of unknown quantum states' by Oszmaniec et al. (2016). In this paper, the authors first proved a no-go theorem that forbids the existence of a universal probabilistic quantum protocol producing a superposition of two entirely unknown quantum states. They also provided an explicit probabilistic protocol which generates a superposition of two unknown quantum states, provided that each quantum state to be superposed has a fixed overlap with a known referential pure state.
In my talk, I will first give a basic introduction to some elementary concepts of quantum information theory. Based on this introduction, I will then discuss the above results regarding the superposition of quantum states in detail.
