Calculating Heat Technology Transition Scenarios using GeoPython for Climate Neutral Heating Future in Manucipalities

Our interactive heat map of Germany shows the key indicators of building energy efficiency and decarbonization for every level of administration. We use statistical data to help municipalities understand and plan their heat transition, taking into account their specific local challenges.

Our talk will demonstrate how we use GeoPython tools to calculate heat technology transition scenarios for climate neutral heating in municipalities. We will show you our interactive map, which you can access at this link: https://www.eon.com/de/c/waermewende/.... This map displays the heat demand, CO2 emissions, heating technology mix and renovation status of private and business buildings at different levels of spatial resolution. The data behind the map is generated by our Heatconcept Application, which is written entirely in Python and uses various geopackages such as geopandas, geovoronoi, seaborn, h3, folium, fiona, pyproj, shapely, geoalchemy and more. Our application produces both status quo and future scenarios for the use of specific heating technologies in 20.5 million buildings in Germany from 2023 to 2045, based on proprietary data, open data and assumptions from the literature and business. The resulting data is used for different use cases that promote transparency in the heating sector. One of these use cases is the EON interaktive Wärmekarte, which informs the public about the current heating technology mix on an aggregated level.
