Displaced by a devastating war back home, Sudan’s women footballers are refusing to give up their game.

After fleeing the conflict, many arrived in Egypt with nothing but their determination to play. For them, football is more than a sport — it is a lifeline. The pitch has become both a place of healing and resistance. Training together offers strength, and a sense of identity after the trauma of displacement.

Faced with insecurity, lost family members, and the struggle of starting again without residency papers or financial support, rebuilding a team in exile has not been easy. Yet, through grassroots initiatives and the solidarity of organisations providing safe spaces, Sudanese women footballers have been able to come together again.

For them, football has become a way to confront the pressures of exile, to support one another, and to keep alive the dreams they once carried in Sudan — from playing in the national league to captaining their country’s team. In exile, they are laying the foundations for the future of Sudanese women’s football.
